  • People saying he is the most dangerous and violent patient...yet in his so called hallucinations...he had the opportunity to be violent yet he did not... exactly what Rachel said in the cave once you are declared insane... anything you say or do is part of that insanity...it happen in our everyday life...once the media declare you a criminal or a bad person... that's it...you are done...as majority of people will do anything to justify what they have been made to believe... there by coming up with all sorts of weak shallow theories to explain their decision that has been heavily influenced by public opinion

  • Damn, I forgot about the glass of WATER!! I noticed it was missing from the shot as the patient was drinking it. I was playing it over and over and thought that the editors missed it or forgot to cgi it in or something lol. Then I thought that Scorcesse is one of the best of the best and wouldn't EVER have a slip like that in his movie. Well, that's how good the movie is. I completely forgot about it and didn't bother looking into it after the movie was done. What a great movie, plot, acting. I was blown away the last 10 mins (as typical Scorcesse movies do).

  • He sorta HAD to kill his wife, as she was kinda-sorta turning into an " Anglo" 'Llarona". This a great movie and you can debate with friends for HOURS about whether or not Andrew did KNOW that his wife killed his kids ( the therapy worked in *finally* , but the TRUTH was far too painful, so he CHOSE to have a lobotomy so the painful memory of being such a workaholic, and when facing the truth of his wife's actions he feels extreme guilt--- so he WANTS to have the radical surgery so he doesn't have to live with the memories of what happened to his wife and children....

  • Another point to mention. The music which plays while Teddy and Chuck were interviewing Dr.Cawley and Dr.Naehring in the office, and in Teddys flashback to watching the Nazi officer die were as mentioned in the movie by Gustav Mahler. What is not mentioned is that Mahler was of Jewish descent and his music was therefore banned in Nazi-Germany. Another clue to Andrew’s deloution or something more?

However Andrew CHOSE to live in a role playing fantasy because he could not bear the REALITY OF TRUTH. So that begs the question "Is he really insane? No. He is not. He is really Sane but the truth hurts so he chooses Death dying a good man instead of Life and living with the painful , chaotic truth.

  • I've always thought that the idea of recognised film critics for psychological film is unjust. The reason this film is so outstanding is because of the effects it has on people differently. So a film is defined by critics who think It's a thriller with a twist. It may not heavily be the case for this film, however I've seen online comments who compare this film to others such as 'inglorious bastards'. The fact that a rating such as this can dissuade people from watching it is stupid. It shouldn't be compared. Critics may rate films not on the truth of the mental illness, but use it as an opportunity to display their opinions on the genre as a whole. Shutter island i think is a representative on how destructive mental illness can be to anyone exposed to it. The critics should comment on this saying that these are people in our world, not fictional, and this is real. The message of this is best encapsulated in the line "Once you're declared insane, then anything you do is called part of that insanity". This is what they should have been talking about. Its not an edgy thriller, It's a masterpiece that illustrates the truth of just one branch of mental illness.

  • I think that there was actually no storm but rather just rain. Teddy’s hatred for water causes him to over exaggerate the rain into the storm. This theory is supported by the fact that Crawley would never let him out in a dangerous storm that might kill him.

It reminds me of a cross between “Beautiful Mind” & “One Flew Over the Cuckos Nest”, with possibly a dash of “Francis”. I love how this movie, like “Beautiful Mind” takes you through the mind of the person and their reality, then revealing what it all was about and how real an altered perception can feel. And can we just take a minute to admire the awesome and foreboding score! Brilliant!

      MapleheadsMapleheadsIl y a 2 mois
    • FOOKIN HALE Teddy has been lobotomised before as the experiment on him has been done before. I believe the end of the film on the steps is the beginning, he goes off to be lobotomised. Notice the band aid on his head at the start of film. We like teddy are not sure what is the truth. He is clearly part of mind control experiment. He uses defence mechanism to protect himself from danger or illness. Not guilt.

      MapleheadsMapleheadsIl y a 2 mois
    • @Mapleheads I see where you are getting at. His guilt ties soley to his experience at war. Where his "kids" and "wife" was depicted as the civilians killed by the nazis. Thats why he says he is a monster even if it could be considered justified that he murdered those nazis. Showing that he would go to great lengths for justice when it is directly tied to himself like the murder of family member (his daughter being killed by the wife and him killing his own wife). It also seems convinient that he was a marshall after war and after the familys death he regresses into a marshall. It would make more sense that he regressed into a "marshall" coming back from the war. Proving that he was in this dellusion since the beginning and that he really had no family.

      FOOKIN HALEFOOKIN HALEIl y a 2 mois
    • FOOKIN HALE fr-vision.com/detail/vid%C3%A9o-CUwT3AZGfBQ.html Pay attention to Ben Kingsley at 2-15m. Throughout the film the object is to disarm and weaken the persons sanity. It starts by teddy having to hand over his firearm. Also the film is non linear

  • "Once you're declared insane, then anything you do is called part of that insanity. Reasonable protests are denial. Valid fears, paranoia." -Rachel Solando (cave). The whole way through I had a fear that Andrew was going to end up insane himself and I was sad that it was true and he was a patient. It seems these mind fuq movies always have the same ending where the protagonist does not "reveal the truth" or overcome his/her fears as we wanted them to.
